Hi Suzay,
The picture you have listed as a self portrait of Hugo Breul is not. He was bald on top way before he was gray. He was my great grandfather. Here are some photos of him.

Stephanie,
also Live Auctioneers site presents this painting as a Self Portrait:
http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/6506696
Looking at your interesting photo set one can notice a certain similarity with the painting called “Judge”.
Anyway, I would like to post here the portraits of Lucy Breul and Stephanie Breul, quoting your Flickr site. Do I have your permission?

Sure (on posting the paintings). I think the self portrait is an educated guess rather than an actual portrait. He had blue eyes and his nose wasn’t aquiline either.

Your information on your great grandfather is very interesting. We live near Phoenix Az, and recently purchased an oil painting
from him from 1893. We love his work and would love any information about him that you might have. The portrait we bought is
of a monk holding a cross, reading a bible. It’s beautiful!!

I believe the identity of the man portrayed is Joshua Slocum, he bears a striking resemblance. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/41/Joshua_Slocum_cph.3b46344.jpg
Is it at all possible that the painter had contact with the first man who sail single-handedly around the world?
