Nubile “Dorothea” stands out like a sore thumb in this array of staid, prim and proper portraiture! I would love to know what the story was with her. Alas, we will never know. 🙂

We do instead! 🙂 Dorothea is inspired by a character in Miguel de Cervantes’s “Don Quixote de la Mancha”. Initially, she is mistaken for a man because she’s wearing a man’s clothes. After she is seduced through trickery and abandoned by a man who’s already married, she runs off into the wilderness out of shame…and that’s why she sticks out like a sore thumb!
