Hello Doyle,
I have recently acquired a William Jacob Hays still life with flowers that I am searching information on. I don’t know if you can help me but please send me an email and I would be interested to hear from you. I have been doing alot of research on Hays and cannot find a good reference to see all of his listings. I know he was most noted for his frontier animal work but also read he did still lifes as well. “Basket of Strawberries”, is probably his most notable.
Again, please send me an email and hopefully we can exchange some good information on Hays.
Thank you.
Jeff

Hi Jeff,
I would check out the smithsonian database, SIRIS. you can google Siris and Art, and select one of first two finds, and that should get you there. in the American Painting database, most of Hays’ productions are listed. There really is no other source that has compliled them all, and that’s really what I’m attempting. I’m very excited to hear from you, and that one more Hays’ work is somewhere safe. I would love to know more about your Hays’ painting. my best contact is doyle_buhler@hotmail.com. All the best to you, doyle

Doyle,
I collect American historical letters, and I recently acquired a letter from General Lorenzo Thomas, written in April of 1860. He is writing to Colonel John Munroe, and he introduces an “artist of merit”, a Wm. Hayes (sic) who is coming to the west to, as he puts it, “hunt the buffalos.” This must be the very trip that Hays took in the summer of 1860 to gather material for a lot of his works. If you would like a copy of the letter, I would be glad for you to include it in your work. My email address is chrisandlinda1@verizon.net.

Hi Doyle
I wonder if you finished your book on William Hays, and if so, if you could tell me whether he ever painted scenes either from Yellowstone or Grand Teton National Parks. My wife and I are currently writing a book on the painters of the Tetons and Yellowstone, and are looking for any works by Hays that might be relevant. Thanks very much.

Hi Jim, Sorry about the delay…No, i have not finished. In fact, i got behind on the Hays project, as I was completing my dissertation, and then I lost most of my contacts, favorites, etc from my old computer. But i am back at it, and would love to help in any way i can, and if you finished the book, i hope you were able to able to uncover some gems. I don’t recall any specific scenes of the Tetons or Yellowstone, but he did journey up the Yellowstone R. aways during his brief adventure, and has a few drawings and completed paintings of nonspecific landscapes that call to mind those regions. Let me know what stage you’re at, and if I can still be of help. All the best,
doyle

Hi Steve, I was wondering, if there is any writing on the back, or canvas maker stamps, if you could send a picture of the back of the painting. I would be grateful! doyle_buhler@hotmail.com
Also, do you have a specific auction house in mind? or are you going to put it in a gallery to sell? Thanks again

I saw a Wm Jacob Hays dog painting (slightly damaged) at an inn in CT yesterday. It’s an old establishment, and I do not think that the owners realize what they have. It’s a very large painting.

Excuse my delay in responding…I went thru some computer issues last year, and lost most of my favorites and whatnot…That is interesting about the CT inn art by Hays. Its been a while, but do you recall the name of the inn? i would love to contact the owner and find more info on it, and maybe get a picture of it.
