Greeting Mike, Did you find out the worth of Melrose-“crossing in the stream”. My family left me a Lito N0# 602.
Can you offer me any information, value, size 16×20″, etc about This? Or better who knows about his work?

After the death of my wife’s father in 2007 we found an old landscape oil painting in his basement that included the artist’s signature as “Melrose”. While researching A. Melrose on the internet I was surprised to see a “nearly” identical painting on your site. It is a version of “Mills and Dales of New England”. Our painting measures 22″ x 36″ and retains the original inner gilt frame with the 1886 patented stretchers, so I believe it is original (the outer frame section is missing). Our painting is nearly identical to the painting on your site but close inspection shows slight variations in the water lilly’s in the foreground – so ours is definitely a different version. Our question is what can you tell us about this painting including how many versions might there be? We recently discussed having it professionally cleaned (ours is very dirty) so we were interested in anything you can tell us about it – including the approximate value for insurance purposes. We don’t know much about the painting’s history but my wife’s family has connections to Massachusetts so it makes sense that it decended through her side of the family. We are intrigued.

All I can say is that Andrew Melrose published several chromolitographs after his paintings (“Mills and Dales of New England” included).

I belive I have the original painting by Andrew Melrose titled “The Mariposa Trail”. The overall size is approx. 5 feet by 8 feet. It is museum size. This painting is very old as is the frame that appears to be original. I know this painting came from a San Francisco mansion. There is no signature on the painting. I WOULD GUESS IT WAS PAINTED IN THE 1880’s. There is no question as to the age of this painting but how can I tell for sure Melrose is the painter?

Ronald,
I would be very interested in seeing an image of your painting, and I may be able to identify the artist. If you can take a reasonably clear photo, email it to me at: eldongrupp@yahoo.com.

I am a descendant of Andrew Melrose. Do you have a photo of the painting? He did like to make them large, the family has very few small paintings but several large ones. Most of Andrew’s pieces were sold to wealthy New York families during his lifetime.

Susan I have a print of a painting by Andrew Melrose. He has signed it on the bottom left. The name of the painting is Under the Hawthorns, are you familiar with that one. It is a huge print and a little damage, I can’t find that painting listed anywhere with his things.

The lithograph pictured of The Mariposa Trail (Yosemite Valley) exhibits two major differences from the original painting. First, Bridal Veil Falls is in the wrong place! It should appear in the lowest notch of Cathedral rocks to the left of its placement in the lithograph. Second, in the original painting the brush seen in the extreme lower right corner of the lithograph is, instead, a beautiful mountain spring. I have no idea why these changes were made in transferring the original to stone.

I have a Melrose painting of a man and girl on a wagon crossing a stream from a home up on a hill in top right corner, to a women waiting on the other side. I don’t know much about it, let alone if its real or not. I haven’t managed to find any info on it
